You're Already in the Cloud. What's Next?
Quick answer
Microsoft Azure is Microsoft's public cloud platform that provides infrastructure and platform building blocks (virtual servers, databases, networking, backup) on a pay-as-you-go basis. For an SMB, it is the modern replacement for an aging on-premise server, with the three most common starting points being Azure Virtual Machines, Azure AD Domain Services, and Azure Backup & Site Recovery.
| Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Azure | |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud model | Software as a Service (SaaS) | Infrastructure & Platform as a Service (IaaS / PaaS) |
| What you get | Finished software (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint) | Building blocks (virtual servers, databases, networking) |
| Typical SMB use | Email, chat, and file collaboration | Run your own apps and replace on-premise hardware |
If your business uses Microsoft 365 (or Office 365), you are already a cloud customer. Microsoft runs your email (Exchange), your chat (Teams), and your files (SharePoint/OneDrive) in their massive public cloud.
But Microsoft has a much bigger cloud platform called Azure. So, what's the difference?
- Microsoft 365 is "Software as a Service" (SaaS). Microsoft gives you the finished software (like Outlook).
- Microsoft Azure is "Infrastructure as a Service" (IaaS) and "Platform as a Service" (PaaS). Microsoft gives you the building blocks—like virtual servers, databases, and networking—to build and run your own applications.
For a small business, "Azure" can sound intimidating. But it offers powerful, affordable solutions to replace your aging on-premise hardware. Here are the 3 most common Azure services your SMB should be using.
1. Azure Virtual Machines (The "Cloud Server")
What it is: This is the #1 use for most SMBs. Do you have an old server in a closet running your accounting software or your file shares? An Azure Virtual Machine (VM) is a direct replacement for it.
How it works: We build a "virtual" Windows server for you in Microsoft's secure data center. We migrate your accounting software and your files to it. Now, your team can access that server securely from anywhere, just like they did before. But your "server" is now 99.9% reliable, scalable, and you no longer have to worry about the hardware failing.
2. Azure AD Domain Services (The "Login Manager")
What it is: If you have an on-premise server, you probably have "Active Directory." This is the service that manages all your user logins (e.g., JSMITH) and passwords. When you move that server to the cloud, you still need a way to manage logins.
How it works: Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is the "identity" service for Microsoft 365. "Azure AD Domain Services" is a feature that provides all the traditional login services you're used to, but running entirely in the cloud. It allows you to have one, single, secure login for all your applications, both in the cloud and on-premise, all secured with MFA.
3. Azure Backup & Site Recovery (The "Disaster Plan")
What it is: This is the modern, affordable solution for Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery (BC/DR).
How it works:
- Azure Backup: This service allows you to back up your on-premise servers (and even your M365 data) to Azure. This gets you that critical "off-site" copy from the 3-2-1 rule, and it's far cheaper and more reliable than tapes.
- Azure Site Recovery (ASR): This is full-blown Disaster Recovery. ASR constantly replicates your on-premise servers to Azure. If your building burns down, we can "fail over" to Azure and boot up your replicated servers in the cloud within minutes. Your business is back online before you've even called the insurance company.
Azure is Your Server Closet, Modernized
Don't let the name intimidate you. For an SMB, "Azure" is simply the modern, more secure, and more reliable way to run the same services you've always run.
It lets you get rid of that expensive, aging hardware and move to a predictable, monthly "pay-as-you-go" model. A good MSP can manage your entire Azure environment for you, so you get all the benefits without any of the complexity.
